Hi Tom,

Those are typical answers from freelance sites.

Many of the people you'll find on freelance sites have the wrong attitude in my experience. And they lie to get the job. Many people (freelance or otherwise) who claim they can do this or that often have only rudimentary coding experience. Many people call themselves "developers" when really they're designers who know a little PHP - nothing wrong with that skill set but it's incorrect to call themselves developers.

There's definitely a methodology in dealing with them to make sure you get the right person to do the work for you and who (most importantly) also has the right attitude. I don't like to have a relationship where I'm the client. It's going to go bad unless you manage it really well as you get treated like a source of cash rather than a partner to work with.

It's better if you can find someone who will work full or part time for you as you can dictate the relationship and make it much better for both parties than it would otherwise be.

Finding good people can be a flaming nightmare. You're going to have to pay more for the right person, but it's worth it. For a long time now I've been using the <a href="http://store.replacemyself.com/?aid=3007">ReplaceMyself</a> database together with OnlineJobs - all part of the same monthly deal.

But it's very hard to find the right people and I spend quite a good deal of time looking.

Another alternative I'm told can be very good is to use <a href="http://www.naukri.com/">Naukri.com</a> - an Indian job site - I've not tried them. Here you'll find people who are working for companies like Oracle, Microsoft and IBM. I'm reliably told that if you offer work for $1,000 - $2,000 month you'll get those top flight people. But you need to make sure you go through a strict interview process with candidates to weed out the bad ones.

A friend of mine placed an ad on Naukri and got 30 candidates. He went through an interview process that included telephone calls and some coding work as a test until he got down to 5 or 6 candidates and shortlisted 2. He got the #2 guy as the #1 chickened out as he'd just got married and wanted the job stability he thought he'd get from his current job.

My friend says the #2 guy "walks on water" and can do pretty much anything he asks of him extremely quickly.

That's the kind of person you want. If they can do the work quickly then it doesn't matter that you're paying them $2,000 month as you can easily make that money back in sales.

Hi Vern,

Ah - there's a good reason not to always jump on the upgrade bandwagon. ;-) I use Portable Apps and the updates tend to be a little slower. I'll make sure not to upgrade when it's available until I know Pencil still works.

I'll check your ticket out for you myself in the morning.

Hi Jim,

It won't keep track of click throughs, but yes that's probably a good idea if you intend to sell ad space on your site. But then it would be a MUCH bigger plugin I think... I'll keep it in mind.

If you only want to track clicks for your own purposes then you could use a click tracking script of some kind to do so, either an affiliate link cloaker or maybe a service like StatCounter.

Where and how do you suggest finding a good developer? I have tried odesk and found it to be quite a challenge to find a programmer that knows what they are talking about. Most of the responses that I have gotten to a ad that reads" Need WordPress plugin developed, have details" come with a response like: i can progeam in php, c+....etc.. So i respond, can you or do you have examples of your wordpress work? they respond I can program anything you want....blah blah blah...

So, it is frustrating to find people that can do what you want, however I know for a fact the you have found such people, due to thte amount of plugins you braing to market.

Please advise, Thanks

Thanks for sharing the pencil tool, Frank! Also, the plugin sounds like a good idea. Will it keep track of click-throughs? That's a good option to have when selling ad space.
