If you run a web site (or more than one), or you have precious family photos and videos stored on the PC of your hard drive, how scary would that five word story be to you?

And are you taking it seriously?

Imagine how bad it would be to rebuild your web site, and how bad it would feel to have lost irreplaceable photos and videos.

Moments of your family’s life lost forever.

For the price of a nice cup of coffee and an hour of your time, that scenario, or any of these others, need never happen to you.[/fusion_text][/fullwidth][fullwidth backgroundcolor=”#c9f9ff” backgroundimage=”” backgroundrepeat=”no-repeat” backgroundposition=”left top” backgroundattachment=”scroll” video_webm=”” video_mp4=”” video_ogv=”” video_preview_image=”” overlay_color=”” overlay_opacity=”0.5″ video_mute=”yes” video_loop=”yes” fade=”no” bordersize=”0px” bordercolor=”” borderstyle=”solid” paddingtop=”100px” paddingbottom=”100px” paddingleft=”300px” paddingright=”300px” menu_anchor=”” equal_height_columns=”no” hundred_percent=”no” class=”” id=””][one_third last=”no” spacing=”yes” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]Short Story #1[/fusion_text][/one_third][two_third last=”yes” spacing=”yes” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]One day Jean woke up and checked her web site for comments.

It was down.

She raised a support ticket with her web host and 15 minutes later had the bad news. The hard drive that ran her web site had suffered a failure and was now junk. They were installing a new one and her domain would be available in about two hours. However she would have to restore her site from one of her own backups as they didn’t keep any.

Jean started to cry. She didn’t have any backups. All she had was some images and notes that she’d uploaded to her site. She’d lost 6 months worth of work, plus her list of customers, sales, and membership details.

She was back to square one.[/fusion_text][/two_third][/fullwidth][fullwidth backgroundcolor=”” backgroundimage=”” backgroundrepeat=”no-repeat” backgroundposition=”left top” backgroundattachment=”scroll” video_webm=”” video_mp4=”” video_ogv=”” video_preview_image=”” overlay_color=”” overlay_opacity=”0.5″ video_mute=”yes” video_loop=”yes” fade=”no” bordersize=”0px” bordercolor=”” borderstyle=”solid” paddingtop=”200px” paddingbottom=”200px” paddingleft=”300px” paddingright=”300px” menu_anchor=”” equal_height_columns=”no” hundred_percent=”no” class=”” id=””][two_third last=”no” spacing=”yes” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]Dave had an email from a customer saying that his site had been hacked and when he checked it was true. “Script kiddies” had gained access to his site using a new exploit and deleted everything. They replaced it with some words along the lines of “we pwned ur site – haxors r us” and left it for dead.

Luckily Dave did have a database-only backup he’d thought to take a couple of months ago and was able to restore the bulk of his site, but sadly had lost the last few weeks of his work. Dave was annoyed and vowed to take backups once a week, but after a couple of weeks forgot and slipped back into his routine of taking backups when it occurred to him. It’s just a matter of time before he gets the bad news again.[/fusion_text][/two_third][one_third last=”yes” spacing=”yes” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]Short Story #2[/fusion_text][/one_third][/fullwidth][fullwidth backgroundcolor=”” backgroundimage=”” backgroundrepeat=”no-repeat” backgroundposition=”left top” backgroundattachment=”scroll” video_webm=”” video_mp4=”” video_ogv=”” video_preview_image=”” overlay_color=”” overlay_opacity=”0.5″ video_mute=”yes” video_loop=”yes” fade=”no” bordersize=”0px” bordercolor=”” borderstyle=”solid” paddingtop=”200px” paddingbottom=”200px” paddingleft=”300px” paddingright=”300px” menu_anchor=”” equal_height_columns=”no” hundred_percent=”no” class=”” id=””][one_third last=”no” spacing=”yes” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]Short Story #3[/fusion_text][/one_third][two_third last=”yes” spacing=”yes” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]Bob had heard the stories of what had happened to other people’s web sites and decided not to let it happen to him. Money was tight and he couldn’t justify the monthly backup rates his web host wanted to charge, so he sketched out a plan to back his site up whenever he made any changes to it, which was pretty much every day. So now every day as part of his routine, he logs into his cPanel account and takes a database and full site backup.

His site is getting bigger all the time and it’s taking longer and longer to download the backups, and sometimes he’ll skip a day or two. It’s a good routine and safer than what most people do, but it’s time consuming and if he’s away or very busy, the backups don’t happen.

One day he’ll do it better.[/fusion_text][/two_third][/fullwidth][fullwidth backgroundcolor=”” backgroundimage=”” backgroundrepeat=”no-repeat” backgroundposition=”left top” backgroundattachment=”scroll” video_webm=”” video_mp4=”” video_ogv=”” video_preview_image=”” overlay_color=”” overlay_opacity=”0.5″ video_mute=”yes” video_loop=”yes” fade=”no” bordersize=”0px” bordercolor=”” borderstyle=”solid” paddingtop=”200px” paddingbottom=”200px” paddingleft=”300px” paddingright=”300px” menu_anchor=”” equal_height_columns=”no” hundred_percent=”no” class=”” id=””][two_third last=”no” spacing=”yes” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]Carol didn’t have much money but she thought the work on her site was worth protecting. So she paid double the going rate for a web host that kept regular backups, so she knew that if the worst happened she could get it all back.

Then the worst did happen and she asked her web host to restore her site. Unfortunately, the backups that they had taken were all corrupt and the only viable one was from months ago. They told her that it wasn’t their responsibility (it was in the fine print) and that she should have been keeping her own backups.[/fusion_text][/two_third][one_third last=”yes” spacing=”yes” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]Short Story #4[/fusion_text][/one_third][/fullwidth][fullwidth backgroundcolor=”” backgroundimage=”” backgroundrepeat=”no-repeat” backgroundposition=”left top” backgroundattachment=”scroll” video_webm=”” video_mp4=”” video_ogv=”” video_preview_image=”” overlay_color=”” overlay_opacity=”0.5″ video_mute=”yes” video_loop=”yes” fade=”no” bordersize=”0px” bordercolor=”” borderstyle=”solid” paddingtop=”200px” paddingbottom=”200px” paddingleft=”300px” paddingright=”300px” menu_anchor=”” equal_height_columns=”no” hundred_percent=”no” class=”” id=””][one_third last=”no” spacing=”yes” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]Short Story #5[/fusion_text][/one_third][two_third last=”yes” spacing=”yes” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]Alice was browsing through last years holiday photos on her hard drive and found that one of them was taking a long time to open. So he started by manually taking weekly backups from his cPanel account.

Then he decided that it made more sense to create everything on his local PC and move it to his web sites. That way he always had the source files at his fingertips.

As he used WordPress he found a plugin to do database backups that could be emailed to him – the database is usually the most important component of a WordPress driven site. And then he decided that the files on his sites only needed backing up every few weeks as he had the database backups and all the image files etc on his desktop computer. All of that data was backed up to a removable USB drive, together with his family photos and videos overnight.

But he still wasn’t happy. He looked around for a better solution, and found it.

Now EVERYTHING is backed up in an automated loop between his web sites, his PC and some cloud storage he bought, and he doesn’t have to do any backups at all now as it all happens as if by magic.

After he’d worked out the strategy, all the software he needed was free.

Every time he puts up a new site, it takes him a few minutes to install a free script and then copy and paste some details into the script from a text file. And hey presto! The site is automatically backed up each night across the internet while he sleeps. All the files go to his main hard drive, to his external USB drive, and off to cloud storage too.

Frank is me by the way.[/fusion_text][/two_third][one_third last=”yes” spacing=”yes” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]Short Story #6[/fusion_text][/one_third][/fullwidth]
